Dreaded Hayfever

I personally don’t think there is anything more annoying than dreaded hayfever. Common and frustrating, the symptoms can at times be totally debilitating.

Allergic rhinitis is often triggered by inhalation of dust, dander, mould spores or pollen. Symptoms can often include a blocked or runny nose, headaches, watery eyes, facial pain/pressure, hives, sneezing, as well as an itchy nose, eyes and back of the throat. Luckily, in most sufferers, it is seasonal.

Basic support for hayfever at home includes:

  • Increasing fluid intake to thin mucous and to reduce inflammation. This includes water, herbal teas or vegetable juices

  • It is best to avoid pro-inflammatory foods and focus on choosing foods high in bioflavonoids such as citrus fruits or berries which can inhibit histamine production

  • Consuming a spoonful of local honey and bee pollen daily (in oats, over yogurt or in a smoothie) has been found to decrease mast cell activation

  • Quercetain can inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells

  • Albizia, Nettle and Baical Skullcap are all anti-allergic herbs and allergic rhinitis which can be used as tea or liquid herbs

  • Homeopathic management is also great at managing individual symptoms

Hayfever can absolutely affect day to day life and be frustrating to live with.

If you are someone who suffers seasonally, don’t hesitate to reach out or book in for an initial consultation so that we can address your hayfever and get you feeling better.
